Programmable thermostats have been around for decades, but not every home HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) system currently has one in place. This is because it is not always necessary to upgrade the thermostat when you replace the AC or heating system, since all thermostats work in a similar manner. When the temperature surpasses the setting on the thermostat, it sends a signal to the HVAC system to begin its cycle.
