How to Tell Your Air Conditioner Needs Replacement

There’s just no getting around it: your car, your television, your refrigerator, and all of the large mechanical and electrical systems you depend on will not last forever. There will come a day when you will need to abandon your older air conditioner for a new system. But this does not have to be such a bad thing, especially since today’s units are able to save you a whole lot of money on your monthly bills. Here are a few of the cases in which our professionals often recommend a replacement.

  • A Costly Repair: If your technician gives you an option between paying an exorbitant amount for repairs and choosing a replacement unit, it may be best to go with the replacement. The parts your technician replaces probably won’t be completely compatible with the existing components. These may continue to wear down and need replacement eventually as well, which usually ends up to be a lot more expensive in the long run. We often recommend replacement for repairs over $500.
  • Frequent Repairs: When your system seems to require repairs far too frequently, it could be a sign that something is wrong with the system. Sometimes, improper sizing during installation contributes to a faulty system, and there are no repairs that can really resolve this issue. Installing a new air conditioner may be your best option when it comes to efficiency and performance.
  • Inefficiency: You may be able to reduce your AC bills with a professional maintenance visit, or even by simply changing the AC filter. But if these steps do little to keep costs low, you should think about purchasing a brand new high-efficiency air conditioner, especially if your existing unit is ten years or older.
  • Old Age: After about a decade or more, performance starts to slow down, professional maintenance may not help, and replacing your older AC might be the best option. A high-efficiency AC could save you dozens or hundreds of dollars a year on AC costs.
