Ductless Air Conditioning: Is It an Option for You?

Homeowners who do not have any ductwork in their homes often install small window or room air conditioners as a compromise. These can get the job done in mild climates, but our extreme temperatures often call for a more powerful system. The hassle of installing and servicing a window unit along with the high cost of operation and poor performance can be frustrating, but what else can you do? A ductless air conditioning system may be the unit for you!

What Is Ductless Air Conditioning?

A ductless air conditioning system goes by many names: ductless heat pump, ductless mini split, and ductless split system. But this system is just like your standard heat pump—an air conditioning system that can also essentially run in reverse to heat your home. The only difference is that the indoor unit—which is usually contained within the duct system—is displayed up high on your wall.

Your technician installs an outdoor condenser unit that looks a lot like the conventional outdoor units of split-system air conditioners. You need multiple indoor units for a home or a single unit if you are only cooling a new room addition or a small space. A refrigerant line and electrical wiring join all of the components, and refrigerant circulates around the system to cool down the home. Each unit also has its own thermostat, so you can control one room individually of the others!

Should I Have It Installed?

If you already have a forced-air air conditioning system powering your home, it’s probably not the best choice as a whole-home air conditioning and heating option. You can always choose a standard heat pump if you want heating and air conditioning in one. Ductless air conditioning system are best for homes without ducts, with deteriorating ductwork, or for single rooms, workshops, and other small spaces. Ask a technician for more information about ductless mini splits.
