Should I Repair My Heater or Have a New Unit Replacement?

Your heater has stopped working once again and you’re stuck making a difficult decision. Can you make a repair once more and expect your system to work a little longer? Or is it time for a brand new unit? We hear this question time and time again. Often, we could make the repair, but it isn’t always worth the cost. Learn more about when to call it quits and upgrade your heater by calling our team, and by reading our quick guide.

When to Repair

Of course, sometimes a repair is all you need to keep the system going. After replacing a motor or a contactor, your system is as good as it was before the problems started, and you don’t have to worry about it happening again anytime soon. If a qualified, trustworthy technician tells you a repair is your best bet, then make the repair!

When to Replace

The average lifespan of a furnace in this country is about 15 years, keeping in mind that the number differs regionally and depending on maintenance. It may be a good idea to replace the heater around that time just so that you don’t have to deal with the potential of a breakdown when you really need your system to work. A few other reasons to replace are as follows:

  • Frequent repairs – If you feel like you’re making far too many repairs on your furnace each and every year, you may be right. You shouldn’t have to make repairs so frequently. And eventually, a system with mismatched parts may struggle to work properly.
  • Costly repairs – When repairs add up to more than half the price of a brand new system, it’s probably time to trade up.
  • High energy bills – After 15 years, your system may no longer be able to operate efficiently, even with proper maintenance. Get a new system with a high AFUE (annual fuel efficiency ratio) for lower bills.
