Installing a High-Efficiency Air Conditioning System

Warmer temperatures are on their way, and faster than you might think. We’ve had some strange weather patterns lately with El Niño storms and alternating hot and cool temperatures, but soon that spring and summer heat we all know will be here to stay for a while. If it’s almost time to replace your air conditioning system, there’s no time to wait. And installing a high-efficiency air conditioning system is the way to go.

Why Efficiency Matters

The efficiency rating of your air conditioning system matters in large part because we live in Southern California! A high-efficiency system protects our natural resources and reduces your impact on the environment.

And summertime temperatures can get to extreme highs. Your air conditioner has to work very hard in the summer, and your bills probably reflect this. A high-efficiency system does typically cost more (the more efficient it is). But you are likely to notice the savings over time, which may soon offset that initial cost of installation.

Choosing an Efficient Air Conditioner

We recommend selecting a new air conditioning system as early on in the season as possible, so that you have plenty of time to choose one that meets all of your needs. You can choose between a conventional split system air conditioner, a ductless system without the need for a preexisting ventilation system, or a heat pump that heats and cools.

Look for a heat pump or air conditioner with a high SEER (seasonal energy efficiency ratio), preferably one larger than 16 (keeping in mind that the minimum SEER in this part of the country is 14). Also, look for the ENERGY STAR seal, and make sure that the system is the proper size for your home. If it is too large, it might short cycle (cycling too frequently, which overworks the system). And if it’s too small, it might not keep you cool, although it will break down trying to. Call a technician to get the right fit for your needs!
