Every forced-air system has a filter. Choosing the right one makes a real difference to the air in your home.
MERV ratings explained
MERV is a scale from 1 to 16 that rates how well a filter captures particles. Most homes do best between MERV 8 and 13. Going higher can restrict airflow on systems that weren't designed for it, which hurts comfort and efficiency. We'll recommend the highest rating your system can handle.
Upgrading your filter setup
Many systems have a thin 1-inch filter slot that clogs quickly. A deeper 4- or 5-inch media cabinet holds more dirt, lasts months longer and allows higher filtration without choking airflow.
When to change filters
Check monthly. Replace 1-inch filters every 1–3 months, more often with pets or during wildfire season. Media filters usually last 6–12 months.
